Goochland to get its first apartment community
July 03, 2013
Rural Goochland County is about to get its first apartment community — a 254-unit upscale complex in the West Creek office park.
The first apartments at The Retreat at West Creek will open this fall. The community will have one- and two-bedroom units ranging from 700 square feet to about 1,300 square feet and renting for $935 to $1,450 a month.
The apartments will offer a new lifestyle choice for people who want to live in Goochland, said Robert H. Minnick with the Goochland Board of Supervisors.
West Creek is the only area in Goochland slated for apartments and no other high-density projects are planned, Minnick said Tuesday.
The eastern edge of Goochland butts up against the bustling Short Pump Town Center corridor in western Henrico County. Goochland in general is known for its rural lifestyle, large acreage lots and single-family homes.
The apartment community will be on about 30 acres in a section of West Creek called “The Notch” near the intersection of West Broad Street and state Route 288.
The Notch at West Creek is a 230-acre mixed-use development targeted for retail, hotel and general and medical offices.
Tommy Pruitt, manager partner of West Creek Associates, which owns the business park, said The Retreat at West Creek sets the stage for more development in The Notch.
“We are currently negotiating with medical office facilities,” he said, adding that an announcement is expected soon.
Pruitt said the plan is for retail such as restaurants and banks to be on property fronting West Broad Street for people who live and work in The Notch.
“It will truly be a mixed-use development in a very green setting,” he said, adding that Tuckahoe Creek runs through the property and natural areas will be preserved.
Amenities at the apartment complex include a clubhouse with wireless access, a business center and gourmet coffee bar. The community will have a pool, fitness center, walking/jogging trails, a cabana with an outdoor kitchen, pet parks and a car care center.
The clubhouse will open in the fall along with the first apartments. The community should be finished by early spring, if the weather cooperates, said Tyler Kassinger with Kassinger Development Group in Sullivan’s Island, S.C.
Kassinger Development is developing The Retreat at West Creek along with Richardson Properties, a private real estate investment company in Greensboro, N.C.
“We are very fortunate that the county selected us to build the first apartment community,” Kassinger said.
Kassinger said he has been inundated with phone calls from people interested or curious about the community since the website, www.TheRetreatatWestCreek.com, was launched last Wednesday.
The Retreat at West Creek should draw residents from a wide area, including people who work in the business park and in the Short Pump area, said Bevan White, spokesman for Atlanta-based Pegasus Residential, which will manage the community.
The office park is the corporate headquarters for the Farm Bureau of Virginia, Performance Food Group and CarMax. McLean-based Capital One Financial Corp. has a West Creek campus and The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond operates a center there as well.
